Story
from the author
“Our story begins with Dr Joe and the The Magic Dentist book, written by Nicki Rowland, which brings the tricks of a magician into his surgery to entertain and educate children during their visit. It is written in rhyming verse and even contains a magic spell to engage the children further.
“Tooth decay is an escalating problem amongst children.
The state of children’s oral health was shocking pre Covid-19 but the crisis and lack of accessibility to NHS dentistry has compacted the problem. The number one reason that children are admitted to hospital in the UK is to have teeth extracted. 42,000 children are given general anaesthetic to have teeth extracted last year. Many under 5’s even having full clearances.”
In response to this escalating problem and the impact it is having on attendance figures at primary schools, Nicki Rowland has launched a national campaign to educate children, provide basic oral health tools and alleviate the inherent fear of the dentist that many children seem to have.
This is a brand-new initiative where Nicki is teaming up dental professionals with magicians from The Magic Circle to visit primary schools across the UK to bring The Magic Dentist to life. The idea is to deliver entertaining and engaging oral health workshops to educate primary school children in how to look after their teeth.
Information on what the Magic Dentist Campaign is all about
I am proud to be a part of this amazing campaign!
I know how tricky and confusing it is for young children to have good oral hygiene. It almost feels like a chore - twice a day, every day! This is why I have taken two of the amazing characters from The Magic Dentist Book and I brought them to life, in the most magical way I could think of. I have created a Cartoon 3D animation, called "Brush, Brush, Brush"
I have put all of my knowledge and experience, as a 3D Animator, a qualified dental nurse and also a mother of 2, into creating this Cartoon animation, which is designed to be used as a Brushing Teeth Tutorial - everyday, twice a day!
Key points that the animation covers are:
How important it is the use of fluoride toothpaste
The different techniques behind a Manual and an Electric toothbrush, for the sole purpose of preventing erosion
2 min timer - the animation shows how to brush each surface, for 10 seconds, and how to angle the brush, too. There is a 30 seconds beeping timer. The animation also shows all the bacteria going away and the teeth becoming whiter. Another key point which makes the animation easier to follow is the fact that we are not using a mirrored view of the teeth, we use an inside one, we think that this is less confusing for children.
And last but not least - why children should not rinse after brushing
